IUCN releases publication "Guidelines for invasive species planning and management on islands"

IUCN releases publication "Guidelines for invasive species planning and management on islands"

Guidelines for invasive species planning and management on islands, edited by Alan Tye, is the new library publication from the World Conservation Union (IUCN). It is available for download here: https://portals.iucn.org/library/node/47764
Abstract
‘Invasive species’ (often called pests, weeds and diseases) are plants, animals, disease agents and other organisms taken beyond their natural range by people, deliberately or unintentionally, and which become destructive to the environment or human livelihoods. Islands are particularly vulnerable to invasive species, owing to the evolution of their native animals and plants in isolation from predators and diseases, and the dependence of island peoples on imports, travel and tourism, which lead to high rates of arrival of new pests. These Guidelines are designed to assist anyone planning and programming the management of invasive species on islands, with the aim of reducing the negative impacts of invasives on islands’ rich and fragile natural heritage, communities and livelihoods. The document provides guidance for anyone who has to find, plan and prioritise funds and resources for invasive species management and research, on islands anywhere, including for the design of national invasive species strategies and action plans. It provides support for islanders and island agencies working on invasive species, as well as guidance for international and regional agencies in providing assistance to them. A major aim is to help and guide the development of more objective, realistic and achievable invasive species plans and programmes.

DOI Invasive Species Community,

Thanks to Aaron Martin, (USFWS Aquatic Invasive Species Program Coordinator - Alaska Region), for sharing information about this new publication.

Check out the newly completed firefighter invasive species pocket guide that the USFWS (Lisa Saperstein - Regional Fire Ecologist - Alaska Region) teamed up with BLM, USDA, and the State of Alaska to create. It is focused on interior Alaska. It will be replaced with a 508 compliant version as soon as it is finished, after which it will also be on the USFS website and others.

Participation Needed: Identifying Research Priorities of Managers Related to Invasive Species and Climate Change

Dear Colleagues,

Your ideas and feedback have been invaluable for informing the direction and topics of research of scientists at UMass, Cornell, and elsewhere. Now, we aim to conduct a more formal survey of your priorities to help guide future research and research communication.

We (researchers at UMass, Amherst) are conducting a study on what invasive species managers need from invasive species researchers. The purpose of this study is to better understand the priorities of managers with respect to managing invasive species in the context of climate change, and to identify any barriers to informed management.

The survey will take about 15 minutes to complete. You may participate in this study if you are a natural resource manager who deals with invasive species. Your participation is completely voluntary and no identifying information will be collected. You are free to skip any question that you choose and can stop the survey at any time. If you have any questions about the research prior to taking the survey, or have trouble accessing the survey itself, please contact the principal investigator: Dr. Bethany Bradley at riscc@umass.edu.

If you would like to participate, please click on/copy the link below and you will be directed to the informed consent page of the survey. Feel free to forward this request to other invasive species managers/listservs.

Thank you for your participation!

Subject: Apply Now for DoD National Public Lands Day Funding!

ALCON... Each year, DoD provides funding to the National Environmental Education Foundation to support local natural and cultural resource projects that implement conservation and management actions on DoD lands in ways that help the resource and help educate soldiers, civilians, their families, and the surrounding communities. This year's event features an increased funding cap and a new emphasis, though ALL good projects will still be considered.

Please distribute the attached announcement (also below) as appropriate, and especially to installations that may wish to submit an application. Deadline to apply is 7/30.

Thanks, Alison

NEEF Now Accepting Applications for 2018 National Public Lands Day Department of Defense Awards

This year's awards will fund NPLD projects on military lands that are open to the public for recreation. 2 new blogs - state initiatives & update on southern California tree-killers

Dear forest pest mavens:
I have posted 2 new blogs at www.cisp.us or www.nivemnic.us
The first reports on welcome efforts in California, Minnesota, and the Western Governors' Association to address invasive species.
The second reports on current information re: the shot hole borers, goldspotted oak borer, and thousand cankers disease in southern California.

I hope you find them informative.
