Faiths Blog...the importance of long-range strategies for responding to non-native tree pests

Hello, tree pest mavens:

I have posted a new blog about the importance of long-range strategies for responding to non-native tree pests -- for example, biocontrol to reduce pest impacts & resistance breeding to strengthen the hosts.  The blog notes that two amendments proposed for the Farm Bill - currently under consideration by the Congress - would provide more secure funding for these approaches.

Alaska- submit an insect or plant specimen to Extension

Have you ever wondered how to submit an insect or plant specimen to Extension to get help with identification. Maybe you are curious about spruce bark beetle or the invasion of chokecherry in Alaska. We have recently published 4 YouTube videos on these subjects.  See the Integrated Pest Management playlist <https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLaq6r5nsLDdeOgN5VSbVxSdGZfFCvwm1I> to watch the videos.

Native grass for horse grazing?

This Rutgers fact sheet has basic info for horse pastures:

Iowa Extension probably has local information.

Someone asked me about getting a pasture started for a horse he is going to buy.  It is something I hadn't really thought of and certainly wouldn't want to recommend any native grasses without knowing for sure they are good for horses, but I thought maybe some people here have recommendations.  The guy lives in Iowa, but I can always search the distribution of any recommendations given.

Webinar: Regulations that apply to moving firewood right now
Join us for a FOCI webinar, Regulations that apply to moving firewood right now, on Thursday, January 25th 2018 at noon Eastern (9am Pacific, 10 Mountain, 11 Central). The regulations that apply to firewood are often not entirely about the firewood itself, which makes it hard to fully categorize and understand the tangled web of rules and quarantines in North America. Each January, staff of Don’t Move Firewood comb through all the recommendations, recommendations, regulations, and informational websites that apply- and then spend February updating the Don’t Move Firewood map (https://www.dontmovefirewood.org/map/)  to reflect the most accurate and current information possible. During this webinar, the manager of Don’t Move Firewood, Leigh Greenwood, will describe all the different ways in which current regulations criss-cross to create a confusing, and fascinating, regulatory landscape. From Asian longhorned beetle to Arkansas, walnut twig beetle to Wyoming Weed and Pest Control Act, we’ll do our best to accurately represent the scope of a whole continent’s rules and regulations in merely one hour. This webinar will be recorded for interested parties that cannot attend, and we will post a link to the recorded webinar on this page once completed.

To join the meeting on January 25th, click here: https://tnc.webex.com/tnc/j.php?MTID=m8548624ee4e12a19831746cde6aa9685
