I am sharing the Public meeting agenda with you all (pasted below). I'd also like to highlight the presentations for the Jan. 31 and Feb 28th Public meetings (see below). We encourage and welcome your participation.
  • January 31, 2018 - Bob Nowierski (NIFA), “The Status of Classical Biological Control of Weeds: One Step Forward and Two Steps Back” – Confirmed
  • February 28th talk: “The Permitting Process for Classical Biological Control of Weeds: The role of TAG, BAs, EAs, FONSIs, and the Section 7 Consultation Process”.  Speakers:  Robert M. Nowierski, USDA-NIFA (the TAG Process); Bob Pfannenstiel, USDA-APHIS-PPQ (BAs, EAs, FONSIs); and Jeff Herod, DOI-USFWS (the Section 7 Consultation Process) - Confirmed
Note that we will be trying Zoom as our online conferencing platform during next week's meetings. We have tested it and I think that we've worked out any issues. We are grateful to Bob and his IT team for helping us get this up and running and providing support in the early days of our use of Zoom. Please let me know if you have any additions or edits for the agenda.

  • Presentation:  “The Status of Classical Biological Control of Weeds: One Step Forward and Two Steps Back by Robert M. Nowierski, National Program Leader for Bio-Based Pest Management, USDA - National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA), 800 9th St., S.W., Washington, DC 20024; Ph.: (202) 401-4900; rnowierski@nifa.usda.gov. Dr. Robert Nowierski received an M.S. degree in Entomology (systematics) in 1975 from the University of Idaho and a Ph.D. in 1979 from the University of California at Berkeley in entomology with an emphasis in biological control, integrated pest management, and population ecology. From 1982-2002 Dr. Nowierski was a professor at Montana State University in Bozeman focusing on biological control of weeds and insects, insect/plant ecology and population modeling. From 2002 to present, Dr. Nowierski has served as the National Program Leader for Bio-Based Pest Management with the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (formerly CSREES – the Cooperative State Research Education and Extension Service) in Washington, D.C.  He provides national leadership for the overall planning, development, organization, and management of research and extension programs concerning applied ecology, biological control, and invasive species.
    • Presentation Summary: Classical biological control of weeds is discussed in the context of political, environmental, sociological and regulatory challenges.
