Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM)
encompasses the largest remaining intact tract of glacial outwash prairies in
the Pacific Northwest. These prairies, one of the rarest ecosystems in the
United States, support a host of Endangered Species Act (ESA) listed species.
The presence of the ESA-listed prairie species on JBLM creates mandatory and
costly habitat management and population monitoring requirements that can limit
critical open training lands flexibility. This presentation provides an
overview of partnerships and collaborative efforts advancing ESA species
management and recovery on- and off-base. It will highlight the development and
application of a Conservation Crediting Biological Opinion and the role of the
JBLM Sentinel Landscape.
