In the Middle
East there is a saying, "The goats don't live on the desert; the
goats create the desert." These omnivorous ruminants consume
almost anything remotely resembling a plant, often including the roots.
Thus they are good at clearing weeds, or advancing
desertification.
At Blakely,
after the goats have browsed an area for a week, the portable fence is
removed and they return to their huge van and move elsewhere. While
some weeds will return, their strength has been diminished. So, for
example, ivy may come back, but be much easier to pull.
They are fun to
watch and this event June 4, 1 to 3, will be an educational
opportunity. Child-friendly, and seriously, bring your plant questions
and concerns. We have made great progress at Blakely and encourage
everyone to come and see it.
SAVE this DATE: Saturday, July 16, 1 to 3, at glorious Hawley
Cove Park at the new lot off of Hawley Cove Road, or at the
park sign on Wing Point Way.
We will be removing or deadheading the pernicious (lovely)
purple loosestrife that sucks up wetlands. It's gardening at the beach,
a favorite of many.
